Oral communication is the largest part of a school leader's day.

Even so, very little attention has been given to developing better communication skills and understanding the costs of failing to do so. Doctoral programs, principal licensure programs, and leadership resources (e.g., magazines, conferences) discuss data analysis, DEI, RTI, assessment, and more but never offer specific ideas about how to communicate effectively. Though you are called upon to speak often, you likely have had no instruction in communication skills.

Ineffective oral communication can be costly.

Great ideas are undermined by a mediocre or weak presentation, well-meaning leaders unintentionally hurt staff morale, and many initiatives are Dead On Arrival because of the way the message was designed and/or delivered by the presenter. Leadership is a highly verbal business involving speaking to incredibly diverse audiences, but many school leaders are not adequately prepared for those communication demands.

Gain an in-depth overview of the indicators utilized in the Illinois response to Every Student Success Act (ESSA) accountability system.

See an overview of the ESSA law, the indicators used to designate schools, the requirements of schools designated for targeted and comprehensive support, funding support provided through the Title I - School Improvement 1003(a) Grant, and the requirements of the grant process including the use of the ISBE IWAS portal. Learn the reports used for the annual designations available in IWAS.

Discuss school improvement alignment to ensure positive student achievement. Although time will be devoted to those designated for improvement, this academy will be important for every school due to the annual calculation of the summative index score. Are you a new administrator feeling thrown into the deep end—or someone charged with guiding them through it? Whether you’re stepping into your first leadership role or leading the onboarding process, this session is designed for you.

Even experienced educators can struggle when taking on the new title of School Administrator. This workshop focuses on growing self-efficacy in new leaders—building confidence and competence from day one.

At the same time, you’ll learn how thoughtful onboarding fosters your entire admin team’s collective efficacy, strengthens relationships across the building and district, and aligns new leaders to shared district goals.

When done well, onboarding doesn’t just support the individual—it builds a connected, collaborative leadership culture focused on continuous improvement.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • Building self-efficacy in new administrators for confident leadership
  • Strengthening collective efficacy to support a collaborative admin team
  • Cultivating a positive school culture from the very start
  • Key onboarding strategies that empower and sustain new leaders
  • Navigating challenges during the critical first 90 days without feeling overwhelmed

Great leaders aren’t made overnight—or alone. Join us to create onboarding experiences that empower new administrators and elevate your team’s collective success.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose and impact of intentional onboarding for new administrators.
  • Learn how to build self-efficacy in new administrators stepping into leadership roles.
  • Recognize the role of collective efficacy in shaping strong admin teams.
